In 2004, we began using DNA testing as an adjunct to our genealogical research, to help us determine relationships where old records were not available because of loss or destruction. So far we have tested 19 individuals. We find that we are not one, but several different genetic lines, as might well be expected with a place name such as ours ('Gerstenberger' means 'someone from the town of Gerstenberg'). Over time it would be most interesting to determine who is related to whom, how many distinct genetic families we have, how many have 'daughtered out', etc. Also, as in my case, where I am unable to trace beyond my grandfather, finding relatives who have been able to trace further will give me information on my earlier forebears.
